                                               The script for If I stay movie

The movie that will have you in tears and going through a joinery that I will be telling you will be if I stay.  Staring Chloe Grace Moretz as the main character called Mia who has been in many film such as kick ass 1 and 2. Jamie Blackley as Adam, Mireille Enos as Kat and Joshua Leonard as Denny.  The director of this touching film is R.J Cutler who has directed other movie and documentary one nation under dog and Nashville

This movie is about a young cello player called Mia who has to diagnose if she will stay or not in outer body experience after a car accident put her in a coma. This is also not just about young love no it also about a girl deciding what she want to do with her life and finding out who she is and is stronger enough to stay. In this coming of age movie we will se young love, hard times and decision that will change life. This movie is hybrid, which is for everyone. The garner of the movie is drama, romance, thriller and even music. The only thing that it doesn’t have is action of the gun and explosion type. Even thought it is entertaining it however makes you stop and make you think if I stay

The actor that they have used I think have done the film justice as well as the book. With the talented Chloe you could see she believed in the film. She takes on a different role with this movie whereas her previous roles have been in comedy action, where she is a tough hard -ass. In this one we see she can play a girl struggling with change and that this actor can do anything.

Prop’s character theory will show the closeness of a real family during the film. The main characters are the young couple that are musicians; the girl Mia is classical where as Adam is rock and roll. Two completely different people whose love of music joins them together. Mia seems to be in a rock and roll world with parents who used to be in a band, a brother who loves rock and a boyfriend who is also in a band. Yet she seems so different and happy being the wallflower that no one notices.

In this is the use of Barthes – enigmas, will she stay or go? If she stays how would she live? And is it worth it. You will be like you are the one in the coma or the family member who is given this puzzle and having to deal with all that comes with it.

The music that is used is classical, rock and acoustic. Each time thee music is being played always match the emotion shown on the screen. The classical music has mostly been used for the sad parts. There has even played the song say something by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera

It has a wide range of examples of Strauss’ theory when watching it, you will see happiness and sadness one after the other, dieing, living, love, loneliness, health and sickness, all of them I can see in this movie which will have you crying and wishing for the best for the young lovers.

The best scene

In one scene in the movie we see it is described as the best day where she finally see that she belongs in the family. In this shot we see group of the parent friends, Adam band and Mia all together, playing the instrument around a bonfire. In this scene I would say that Mia propp would be describe as the musician, friend, girlfriend, sister and daughter. This make think she is loved by the amount of people who have gather around this bonfire and just listen to her music. We see close shots, mid shots, point of shot and wide shots of us looking down at the scene before use.  The customs and make up is a everyday wear so you can feel that it was meant to be a everyday event that just end up being the best day. The lighting of it all was very home that you would be comfortable just listen and watching scene for the rest of the movie that will move your heart. The Levi-Strauss of it is calm/ uneasiness, unwanted/belong and normal/unexpected. For example she say her best day was one she didn’t even she coming. That she thought it would be a normal day not the best day.  The music that was being played was calming and meaning full that will help you connect to the scene and character that are involved.

The openings of the film - we are in the sky going through the clouds with Mia tell us about famous composers. The beginning of the film was a animation of the clouds. Then a Shot make you feel peaceful, as especially with the fact that the colours are bright and calm. Then we are brought down from the clouds to see where Mia lives in a small house where it is snowing. The customer and make up is of Mia is her in normal clothes but it is also of a little girl would wear. In this scene you see her sitting down with her brother eating breakfast while reading a magazine. This show what a typical day in the house would be. You have close up and wide shot of the family when Mia starts taking about them.  One of the liv -Strauss I see of this scene is uncertain/ certain, I think this because of the fact she thought she know where she was going where as the rest of the family know what they have to do or happy in there life. Mia character seems to be the shy type, sister, daughter and expressionless . You can tell this by the fact her family is all round her in the scene being shown. The reason why I say her character is shy and expressionless is because of the fact you can see she effect and upset but doesn’t want to show it. However in this scene you can tell that her life has already taken a turn for the unexpected so you can tell where the movie is already heading.

Adam walking downs the hallway

Meet Adam first time we see a wide shot of Adam walking down the hall and everyone stopping or turning to look at him. He is a popular, confident leader and he is his own person. Then he stops at a classroom and sees Mia for the first time. You can tell he is course about her by the look on his face. The barthes of this is when will he introduce himself to this girl that has caught his eye.  He has asked a friend of Mia who is this girl who seem to be in her own little world.  Which leads to there next in counter.

Adam and Mia 

First time they both speak to one another. Was set by Mia locker at school, where we see Adam go and stop at the locker to talk to Mia. He is trying to get Mia to talk more and open up so that he can ask her out. We a point of view shots in most of this scene and it is seem that the camera is set at a eye level when recording them talking. The lighting use is of standard light so you can tell this is a school and nothing else. There is no music in this scene only the sound of people walking up and down the carried doors. As they talk to one another he offer to take her to listen to cello player. Mia is shocked that he has asked her out by the end of the whole conversation the one thing that stick out were the words “ it too late… I see you”. By the end of this whole thing we are left wondering will she go out with this guy that seem like the complete opposite of her.  The Levi-Strauss of this is story, is of first love/hurt even if she doesn’t know it yet. We can see in this scene between Mia and Adam their characters, we see Mia as the shy, bookworm and close off from people she doesn’t know type. Mia doesn’t seem to understand why this person is taking an interest in her. Where as Adam seem to know that he want to take Mia out. Even this early on we see that he think he has a connection with this girl like to hide away. This make me think Adam character in this scene is straightforward, determine and hopeful all at the same time.

The closing scene you have Mia walking away from the bed were she is laying ready to give up until she hear music and say just this one song. That is when she is brought back to her room and sees Adam there play the music.  This is when he start telling her good news as well as saying he will do anything if she stays. When he starts to play his guitar she is hit with all he good memories of her past and then we are brought full force with a bright light. This is were we are left to wonder what happen until we are shown a point of view shot of Adam saying Mia name. This would make Mia the damsel in distress and Adam the hero of the story. You could also describe Adam as the dispirit boyfriend and Mia the fighter who is deciding to give up or carry on. The Levi-Strauss of is life/death, happy /sad and certainty/ uncertainty .I see this because of the way if she doesn’t wake up she will die. Then the way she is happy to see Adam but soon realise she is sad that her family and life will never be the same. The scene is mostly point of view shot of Adam looking at Mia and over the should shots so you could get both Adam and Mia in the mise-en-scene. The Todorov of this scene is Adam trying to make Mia come back to him .The music is of Adam singing while playing his guitar. The music it self it soft that match the scene perfectly

In this scene we have the two main characters who are both hero in the movie making a defined moment. the one boy name is Adam he is the boyfriend other main character, he is also a musician. The girl who is laying in the bed is the main girl who is the girlfriend and a musician as well is name Mia Hall. this scene adam is tell her to come back and he will do anything she want which leads to her see her life and hen waking back up. the villain of this scene is her accident that making her not waking up. Another villain is the sadness she feel knowing nothing will be the same and being lonely.

We have him seating next to the girl who is in a coma, pleading with her to wake up and come back to him. He is holding her hand to show how much he doesn't want to let her go. He is also crying while he is talking. The girl is laying on the bed with a tube to help her breathe.  the puzzle is if she going to wake up and then it is solved by her waking up, however we don't hear he speak.

The theme of this ending scene is sadness because of the fact he is sad that he might not see her wake up and her seeing him being like that. Hope that he might be able to see her awake. It is also of being unsure of if she should carry on after hearing what her boyfriend is saying. then the catain at the end that she open her eyes. we also see the themes of her that might not live or die which we don't find out until which one that wins out.

Todorov (story)

The story of the film for the ending is she is called back by a song being play for her. she is then standing there listen to her boyfriend saying he will do anything if she will just wake up. He will then play a song which bring on a set of morey of the life she had. When she is remmbing all that is happening she then in that moment deciding should she wake up but because she is so move she come back to the person she know she can be happy with. However we don't know that until we are blind by a bright light and see the boyfriend calling her name.  where it then goes to credit

In the beginnning of the movie you are going through the clouds listening to classical music. you are then listening to the main character which is a girl call Mia Hall, talk about a famous composer. She then goes into tell us about her family and what is playing on her mind. but we then see her flash back to when her life started taken a different path, when a boy name Adam started to notice her. So straight away we see that she is a sister, doughty, friend and a hardworking musician. she is introduce as a shy girl who is smart and witty, who dose not fit in with the rest of her family.

Todorov

The story of the film was establish with the girl introducing her self and the family showing us how she is in her normal life. it then goes on to a flash back of when her life started to change for the better when this boy called Adam take notice and started to watch her more closely. This happen till he ask her out saying  you cant hid in that room forever it too late i see you.  once she is brought back to the present she is then persuaded to go out with the family in a car ride which ends tragically with her  fighting for her life. the audience is captured by the fact that they start off in the cloud so you don't know what is going to happen to the main character.

I picked these two one because of the fact you first see her with a lovely family not a lonely for a second .however she feel like she dosent belong to the family she has . Only to have the family she know  taking away from her. This is where she really start to feel lonely but then she see how important and love she really is.

 It is also interesting with the fact that what could have happened to the young couple , who else in the family survives and lastly will she make it? these are the puzzles that are present to us the audience within the first ten mins of the film.

This is the last and ever scene of the movie to which you will find out everything you need to know. It will also bring a tear to your eye.

Cinematography is the way they capture the shots they will use in the film. It is also the way they film the shot that they will take , the creative side of it all to make the audience see what is happening and what they want you to feel. In cinematography it consists of the following list below.

PAN - The movement of the camera going left to right or right to left

ZOOM IN - It is when they go more in to the shot

ZOOM OUT - This is when they go out of the shot

POINT VEIW SHOT - It shows where or what the character is looking or seeing through their eyes.

SPEED/RATE - How fast the shot in the film is

SHALLOW FOCUS - It is when they make everything in the background blurred except what they want people to concentarte on

DEEP FOCUS - It is use to show the whole to to the front all the way at the back with the shot being a clear focus

FRAMING - How they position everything that the camera shot

CLOSE UP  - This is when they have a shot of the face of the character. it is use to show how the actor is feeling during the scene

MIDE SHOT - This is a shot of the top half of the character to the mid body section of that person.

LONG SHOT - It is when they have a full body shot with some background of where the character is , this shot is use to show what is happening in the scene

TRACKING SHOT -  When the camera follows the characters around while they are performing the scene that is taking place.

BIRD SHOT -  When the camera is facing straight  down on the scene. this is used when getting a feel of the scene like someone looking down like god.

WORM SHOT - It is when the camera is looking straight up . This give the effect that the worlds is a big place

CRAN SHOT-  It is use when they cant do it with a normal camera.

TILT - When they move the camera up and down when filming

HIGH ANGLE - This is when it is place up at eyes lave with it pointing down at people to show that one character is high then the others

LOW ANGLE - this is when the camera is low and is pointing up to show the person looking up at the person

What is editing

Editing is  the  putting together of the film itself. This is when the people who film gather all the material they will then give it to the editor. he or she will then put the clips or shots in time order, they can also make the film slower or quicker depending on how much he or she puts in to the final product.  The editor is also in charge of what goes in such as  songs , which clips ,  the credits and how long the film is .The editing of shots would consider some of the following of the list below.

JUMP CUT - When they jump to a new scene or setting in the film

SHOT REVERSE SHOT - This shot is used to show the character talking or looking at a person or object

180 DEGREE - This is a rule that helps the audience understand where things are in the film.

TRANSITION - The change between one scene to the next

CROSS CUTTING- It is when the camera goes from one action to the other then comes back to where it has started

MONTAGE- When they use a skill that use rapid editing that includes music and special effects to give  narrative information

What is music

Well I find that music is a way to describe a way a person feels or how they have dealt with it. I also find it is note put together in a rhythm of Patterson to make a enjoyable sound to listen to

In films music is involved in so many ways, such as sound effects, background music, non-diegetic and diegetic. When we use music it helps us create a better film than a silent film will ever be. Even in silent films they used music which is added afterwards to emphasise what was happening on screen or going to. In films they have two sorts of music –music scores and music songs. Music scores are the sound effects in the film, such as piano melody speeding up to represent the scene, to establish or reinforce the mood of a scene, whereas the song is often written by a popular artist which sings about the journey of the character and what they have been through in the film, or the journey or character itself. In some films, such as High School Musical they break into a song where they want to express their feelings.

Film makers still use music to emphasise what is happening.  The music sometimes emphasises the real sounds in the scene. It can make the audience more aware of what is going on in the film.

Music is used to communicate emotions to the audience. If the film is getting more scary, they pick up the tempo; to get adrenaline going, for example, they use a drum for a heartbeat. The music can anticipate what can happen next in the film -In The Conjuring when the music box starts playing it creates an eerie feeling that something is going to happen. It can also be used to communicate what the characters are supposed to be feeling, e.g. in the film of Romeo and Juliet, the music is a sad piano melody, which makes it clear they are sad to be dying, even though they are happy to be together.

Music can also set the scene for the beginning of the movie. The scene can be neutral, but as soon as the music starts you know which direction the movie will take. It can also take you back to a time where they have set a scene or the film, for example, the Great Gatsby uses Jazz music with a modern twist to appeal to people today, but it still takes you back to the Jazz era.

In this clip it shows the opening of Sherlock Holmes opening scene, where it shows him running away from a horse and carriage then kicking in a door . It also doesn't show his face till near the end of the clip.

. Tone -  this mean how it sound for example you can say a soft tone which mean someone who has a quit voice

. Theme music - this is a music that is set or at the end of the Tv, film or a person. the music used is what would be use foe that person, film or Tv only.
. Voiceover - it is when a person is speaking over the filming that is playing.
. Musical Score - It is a written form of music that can be found on sheet music
. Synchronous Sound -  This is when the sound or audio match with what is plying on the film
. Asynchronous Sound  - this is when the sound doesn't come from the film or is not in the reality of the film it self
. Contrapuntal -  It is the music or sound effect that doesn't match the film and will be create a different meaning being showing in the film
. Silence -  This is when no sound will be use but will have the effect of have a erri feel to the film
. Selective Sound -  This is when they take some of the sound from the film to make the ones still there more recginz and to make it more of a effect
. Sound Bridges -  This is when they continues the pieces of music throughout different shot of the film

The Non-diegetic
When i was looking at the clip i could hear the theme music of Sherlock Holmes. i didn't know it was that until the tempo got quicker as the horse gained speed.  It has an asynchronous sound this is when the music that is not in the reality of the film of the sound.  For example the music that is being played throughout out the whole clip is a piano and a base and as it get quicker it also get louder to show how close or fast the horse is going.

The Diegetic
I could hear the horse chasing after the man, at the being is was quiet then it started getting louder as the horse got faster which made me get more excited by it. The  crow could be heard, it was between the the tempo, the beats  of the music. You can also hear the man breathing really hard,  this shows how much he has been running. the sounds that i can hear adds to scene and tell you what is going on -  for example when they load the gun you can tell they mean business.  this would be called the musical score this is used to make more of an atmosphere -  for example, all the sound that goes with the film is louder than the background so that you can still hear what is going on.

mise en scene

          Mise-en-scene

Mise en scene is a French word for what is place in front of a frame. When describing the mise en scene it mostly focuses on setting, props, hair/make up, facial expression, body language, lighting, colour and positioning within the frame. All of this help created the image of the film the director want to create for the audience reaction.

Businessmen

If I was to decorate a room for a businessman in 2012 I would make sure the wallpaper is all in one colour. The reason for this is because I think that if he did have miss match colour it would be too funky for a man of the business world. The props I would use would be something of manly designs for example a big desk that is slick. I would also put in a computer screen in black on the desk because my business man is a big shot who makes the money in the company. I would also put in floor to ceiling window like Oliver Queen’s office. I would make sure it is all dark colours for the floor as well for example dark tiles that match the wall. I wouldn’t put up any pictures except one which will be a big picture in black and white and have some significance of the person itself. It would be a spotless clean room where it will look set up and not lived in. The table would be a low and made of glass with matching chairs that would also go with the desk. The table would be put in the centre of the room this is so the room have focus. The desk would be put in the middle of the window so he can see everything that is going on.

A poor destitute couple in the 17 century

The room would be a cramp small hole in the wall where in this day and age we would not think it is big enough for the one person to live in. The floor would be a dirty floor with a layer of dust. A dark room with only the one candle light guide their way. The window would be broken to there is no point or no window at all so would be cold when it get dark. The couple’s clothes would be hanging from the ceiling for example men’s trousers, a shirt with holes in it, a women’s dress with underwear hanging as well.  The props I would put a rundown bed with a spring hanging out the reason for this I think that in that day and age they would not have been able to afford a new bed. The table would be high up with odd mismatch chairs that look like they have be thrown out by wealthier people. The wood is mostly like have crack in it. There would be two of everything for example metal cups, chipped plates and the odd spoon and fork.

When I think about different colour to do with different emotion I would associate with emotions more than you would with others for example?

RED

When I think or see the colour red I would automatically think that it is the colour of lust because it is such a vivid colour and passion as well. I would also say it remind me of blood cause it is the same colour.  I would say love because every time Valentine’s Day comes around you always see the red and pink hearts around and red rose.  I would associate it with evil because every time you think of the devil you would come you with a red face. This brings me to the fact that red you would also come to the element fire that would all link to the points above.  We also say that red is the colour of anger cause of how powerful and the fact people face goes red.

GREEN

When I think of the colour green i would related it to the element of nature such as trees, grass , forest and so on. The colour for me also represents a peace calming effect where you can be transported to surreal place. When I think of the colour green I think of the recycling sign that is to do with the environment and fire exit.  The reason why we always use this colour is because we think it is a safe colour.  The colour green is what you also put with the sin of envy. This is where the sayings come from: green with envy and the green eyed monster.

White

This is a colour that you would associate with a good soul because the colour itself is so pure.  When you think of the colour white you would think of white angels’ wings in the clouds. With the colour you would think of someone who innocent that is where the saying comes from for the bride to wear white on her wedding day. It is also a neutral colour that people use it when they don’t know the sex of the baby or when surrendering at war. This also makes me think of peace. The colour makes me think of a peaceful mind that is blank like a canvas. I would also say it make me think of light and hope that will come because of how bright it could be .

BLACK

When I think of the colour black I would automatic think of a dark place where no light come through. I also feel that it is a depressing colour but that why most people think that if you wear all black you are a sad Goth. You would also think of it as an evil colour for example if a person in a film was dress in black you would think he is a bad guy. I would also think of death when think of the colour black because it colour that you would wear to a funeral. It also remained me of the saying ; dark or black soul mean someone who is bad right down to his soul.
